My Students
The students in this special day class all have a disability that impacts and disrupts their learning to some degree. They rely heavily on multi-modal means of learning and require intense instruction. My class is wonderful students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free lunch.
These students have a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.
The typical student in my class reads at a between a Kindergarten and beginning first grade level. Many of them struggle with basic phonics and number sense. The goal is to move from learning letters to reading in a short amount of time and we currently do not have the resources to do so. We need your support!
My Project
All of the students are from low‑income households. There are varying levels of skills in our class and the goal is to try to meet each student where they are by giving them as much support they need to succeed. Differentiation is key. The leap frog readers will ensure that each student is hearing and working on a story that is at their level and can greatly assist them. They will have the opportunity to get the individualized support they desperately need. Reading and writing go hand in hand and these resources will give my students access to both.
With these LeapFrog LeapReaders , my students will be able to choose books that will allow them to read independently at their level and provide more opportunities for growth in reading and writing.
They will also get assistance with their writing, which is another area of weakness. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work when they are provided with choices of different stories as well as being able to use multiple modes of learning. I desperately would like to help my students close the reading gap and to do this they need as much access to literacy instruction as possible. As their reading skills increase, so will their writing. Please help us achieve this!
