My Students

My students are energetic, inquisitve and love to read chapter books as a group. Our school is a Title One school in a rural area of Southwest Virginia where over 75% of our student body receives free or reduced lunch. My students love to read but must rely on our school library for their books.

It is a joy to watch my students sit and read and become so involved in the story that they try to give up recess just to finish a chapter.

I especially like the sense of community that develpes when we are reading a chapter book. My students sometimes become so attached to characters that they must console one another when the author writes out a favorite character. I have seen very quiet students find their voice when we are discussing the events of a chapter.

My Project

My students enjoy reading chapter books as a group. I have enjoyed listening to their thoughts and ideas as we discuss each chapter, character and event. I have been so impressed by the depth of their insight and how many times they can relate it back to today's world.

Have you ever read an excerpt from a book and then had to wait to check out the book from the library to see how it ended?

Think about how long it takes for 29 students to read the only copy our library has. This has happened to my class.

The best way to become a good reader is to read.By donating to this project you will help me instill the love of reading into my class and give them opportunity to read a book that they chose.
