This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The feeling of walking through a library, running your fingers along the bookshelves until you find the "one," and curling up in a comfy spot to read is indescribable. Unfortunately, the reading experience in my classroom is a far cry from this image.
My students are voracious readers.
They are constantly begging me for new books to fill our library. Until now I have been making do with a paltry selection supplemented by whatever I can get my hands on at the local library.
My school is a "high-needs" campus with few resources to dedicate to individual classroom libraries. To complicate matters, my students read in two languages, so we need a library that accommodates their English and Spanish needs.
I would love reading to be a wonderful experience for my students, but at the present moment "reading" often looks like reading the same books over and over again while sitting in their rigid desk chairs.
My Project
In spite of the current situation in my classroom, my students have not lost their love for reading. I want to encourage my students to explore all that books have to offer, but I am struggling to do so with an extremely insufficient library.
Your donation will provide my classroom with a wealth of books in both English and Spanish, as well as a carpet and some comfy pillows to create an ideal reading space.
With the resources from this donation, I will be able to fill our classroom with classic stories and books that cater to their dual language needs. In addition, I will be able to create an oasis in my classroom where students can retreat and just read for fun.
When they read at their desks, they unconsciously begin associating reading with work. I don't want my lack of resources to kill my students' passion for reading. This donation will mean the world to them.
My students aspire to be doctors, veterinarians, police men, and teachers.
They have a passion for learning that they have maintained in the face of extremely difficult circumstances outside of school. Some of my students are the first in their families to become literate. This project will ensure that my students never lose their passion, and can go on to achieve great things in high school and beyond.
