Help me give my students the tools and resources they need to be successful mathematicians! Items such as math fact folder games will provide my special education students with multisensory tools for stimulating their mathematical understanding of the world.
My students are inspiring learners who thrive with the right support. Each student uses his or her unique strengths to contribute to a classroom community where we all learn from each other. They are flexible and adaptable, and they deserve access to a supplemental curriculum that allows them to demonstrate their strengths.
My students are storytellers, engineers, authors, editors, skeptics, investigators, scientists, team members, athletes, geologists, artists, and poets.
They are all these things, and they have special needs. In my classroom, we value diversity and believe that each student deserves the opportunity to succeed. We stress awareness and foster the importance of self advocacy.
My Project
Math can be one of the most daunting areas of elementary school for students with math-related disabilities. Given a highly engaging classroom curriculum, special education students often lack the most foundational math skills- including 1:1 correspondence, counting, and math facts to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Given the resources through this project, I would be able to develop the number sense that would eventually develop into stronger computational skills. In this grant, I've requested items including games for foundational skills like counting, but also supplemental materials to reinforce concepts across mathematical domains. With these materials, math can be game-ified, and thus speak to students for whom math skills do not come naturally.
Math games and interactive activities are the most effective way to address math-related disabilities.
With these resources, math can be an engaging and challenging learning opportunity in the special education environment.
Given fun visuals and games, students won't feel daunted by mathematical concepts. Given the math centers, interactive notebooks, and games, math will be a lesson they look forward to doing again and again.
