Our school serves PreK-5 grades in a suburban setting. My classroom is comprised of 26 kind-hearted 5th graders. They greet me each morning with a handshake or hug. Once they step inside the classroom, they are eager to begin learning. They love anything that is hands-on, so this project is a perfect fit for them. My students are provided with engaging learning experiences that push them to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate with one another. I am beyond blessed to be their teacher this year because we have established a strong, caring community, and we like to have fun while we learn.
My Project
Most of us have likely played with LEGO bricks at some time or another. It is easy to see how these toys can be incorporated into a classroom in so many different ways. My students love any chance they get to pull out our current LEGO sets and create. They use their creativity to design and build a variety of structures and scenes. Adding the new items to these will definitely enhance their storytelling about people, animals, and events and build replicas of historical events such as a battle in the Revolutionary War. It's amazing to watch the students see history come alive when they use LEGO. They are able to apply their learning in different ways. Students can also construct concrete math models with LEGO bricks in addition to using them in a variety of STEM activities. The possibilities are endless!
Learning will come to life across multiple subjects with the use of LEGO!
In my classroom, we combine language arts with science and social studies as much as possible. Part of our building's goal is to incorporate more hands-on learning experiences that are relevant to the students. By providing students with LEGO sets, they will have additional opportunities to use their creativity and collaborate with their peers. All students, even those with special needs, feel confident when they learn with LEGO.
