My students need art supplies (crayons, markers, and glue) to create projects that will help them understand other subjects much more clearly—from math and science, to language arts and geography.

My Students
I have the pleasure of working with some of the best and brightest students in our city. As a literacy and social studies teacher, I am delighted to expose the students to various works of literature as well as different cultural contributions from around the world. During our sessions, students work independently, in groups, and in pairs. I encourage the students to read what catches their eye and use their imagination to build their relationship with reading. Some of the students' favorite book collections include "The Diary of A Wimpy Kid", "Hatchet" and "The Bluford High" series.
Artistic expression and literacy go hand in hand.
Drawing not only provides the basis for other creative activities - like painting, sculpture and printmaking - but it also provides a direct link with reading and writing. Providing opportunities for artistic expression outside of the traditional "art" class is important. We give our students the choice to respond to literature using visual interpretations, drawings and captions. I believe that art nurtures inventiveness as it engages children in a process that aids in the development of self-esteem, self-discipline, cooperation, and self-motivation.
My Project
The use of art supplies (markers, crayons, and glue) will help to enhance the students' "Interactive Notebook". The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive notebooks are used for class notes as well as for other activities where the student will be asked to express his/her own ideas and process the information presented in class. The notebook is the ultimate differentiating and alternative assessment tool! It can be used across the curriculum - in all subjects and from the upper elementary grades all the way through high school. An Interactive Student Notebook serves as a live journal, personalized textbook, and a dynamic working portfolio.
Words and diagrams, bullets and arrows, bright ink and pencil, a multitude of colors, highlighting—all reveal a unique personal style as students express their ideas, questions, feelings about and reactions to new content creative ways.
