I teach in a Special Day classroom ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd Grade. Students in this area come from homes where their parents work in an area of agriculture and are very hard working. Each one of my students is a marvel and such a fun little human being! They all have a unique way of learning which is part of what makes teaching them so fun.
Many of the students in my class have been with each other since Kindergarten which fosters a sense of unity and community among them.
My Project
Learning to read can be difficult for any student, but there are ways we can help! Students with special needs often have an even more difficult time forming words, manipulating words and recognizing letters.
Studies show that using multiple means of manipulating words/letters (such as phonics flip charts, magnetic sight word sentences and word/sound manipulation) can increase retention of newly learned skills in young readers.
Students with various disabilities need different ways to interact with words and letters to truly learn how to read and keep those skills forever.
Giving our students alternative options for reading and playing with words, will help increase the likelihood that the learning they acquire now will stay with them for the years to come.
