Learning to read can be difficult for any student, but there are ways we can help! Students with special needs often have an even more difficult time forming words, manipulating words and recognizing letters. Studies show that using multiple means of manipulating words/letters (such as phonics flip charts, magnetic sight word sentences and word/sound manipulation) can increase retention of newly learned skills in young readers. Students with various disabilities need different ways to interact with words and letters to truly learn how to read and keep those skills forever. Giving our students alternative options for reading and playing with words, will help increase the likelihood that the learning they acquire now will stay with them for the years to come.
