Each year our six kindergarten teachers strive each day to get their 25 students to believe that they can be successful and productive no matter what their background or home life has been. The students in our classes represent a diverse population of ethnicity as well as socioeconomic statuses. Over 73% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of our students primarily speak Spanish in their homes and are working toward becoming fluent in English. Extracurricular sports presents a great opportunity for students to develop vocabulary as well as social skills necessary to become productive members of society.
A gymnastics club would give the students the opportunity to help improve balance and cooperation as they learn to take turns.
Kindergarten students are eager to participate in extracurricular activities, and as teachers, we want to encourage them to develop teamwork and a drive to succeed in life. We want our students to develop personally, socially, and build vital social skills that encourage turn taking, teamwork, and various other things that are valued in extracurricular activities.
My Project
We would like to have the opportunity to begin a gymnastics club that can offer students the chance to build strength, friendships, teamwork, and increase balance. We have never had the opportunity to offer any type of extra curricular sports for younger students and these items will make it possible to encourage students to be active after the school day.
To transform our space and encourage students in gymnastics, we have selected many items that require students to improve balance.
We would like to get exercise gym mats to cover the floor space and different things we can use for balancing such as foam balance beams, variously sized balance stepping stones, and a curved balance beam. We would like to get a foamnasium gymnasium for the students to be able to climb on and under. These items also encourage students to work together as they take turns using the equipment and building social skills.
