I teach a wonderful group of students in a high poverty neighborhood. The children I teach have the same drive to learn as students in more affluent neighborhoods.
I have been teaching in this same neighborhood for 10 years and for the past 10 years, I have seen parents struggle to buy basic supplies for their children.
They often have to choose whether to buy school supplies are food, needless to say, the parents chose to buy food. A lack of supplies can really hurt a students self-esteem.
This year, I had the pleasure of working in a team teaching classroom. My class consisted of a mix of general education students and special education students. In the beginning of the year, I was equal parts terrified and excited. As a general education teacher, I had never had such a high concentration of special education students in my class. My goal was to deliver the content in a fun and engaging manner and to make sure that I addressed all the needs in my classroom. Enter DonorsChoose.org! Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, I was able to obtain 3 Chromebooks and various types of science and STEM equipment to use with my students. This equipment allowed them to take a hands-on approach to their learning. They examined specimens under microscopes which improved their observation skills and their ELA skills because they had to describe what they saw using vivid adjectives. They have programmed robots which improved their Math skills because they had to have a firm understanding of angles to program their robot. The amount of information they learned using these materials has been fantastic. As I plan for next year, I am thinking of creative ways to allow my students to continue to take a hands-on approach to their learning.
A video camera and microphone will be a creative way for my students to show what they have learned after a unit of study.
They would be able to give a newscast or weather report after our unit on natural disasters. They will be able to record documentaries after our unit on the impact that humans have on their environment. They can even make multiplication videos. Making videos will be a unique and fun way to share their knowledge with others.
