"We came to school to work and learn!" I am a teacher at a FOCUS school with a population of 750 students. I was recently reassigned to the fifth grade team to work with a group of below grade level students. Fifth grade is a critical year where students must pass three required state standardized test to be promoted to the next level. The curriculum is very rigorous and students who leave fifth grade without the proper foundation will more than likely lose interest in school.

Although I teach at a high need focus school in one of the "gateway" years, I will not be provided with the necessary hands on materials my students will need to obtain the real world math experience all students need to successfully understand and master the objectives listed in the Standard Course of Study for math as required by the state of North Carolina. My classroom consists of 15 below grade level students, some of which have specific learning disabilities in math, reading, writing, and speech. Many of my students have difficulty focusing, but respond well to hands on activities. Because these students are below grade level, as well as having learning disability which adds to their inability to fully understand mathematical concepts, they have difficulty successfully learning in the same manner as other students in their grade level. It is imperative that they have hands on materials that assist them in their learning. Without these types of activities, teaching these students is much more difficult.

The Grab & Go Math Center will allow students the extra practice they will need to master the targeted math standards in the areas of: Geometry, Problem Solving, Measurement, Algebra, Probability and Fractions. This kit will allow students the ability to continue to practice and master the skills independently. When students are given the opportunity to revisit a skill without the pressures of others watching, their self confidence increases which leads to success for the student. Mastering these standards will allow my fifth grade students to be better prepared for the next level of their educational journey.

Your help will ensure that my students are given the same opportunity to learn and master the needed math skills to build a solid foundation for the rest of their educational careers. Learning these skills will give my students the confidence they will need entering middle school. They will know that they are prepared for the rigorous curriculum of middle school and they will be more confident they will succeed.
