My students are incredibly hard working musicians. We are a high poverty school with over 80% free and reduced lunch. While the school and district own many instruments to loan to the students to play on, they do not come with things like reeds and care products - these we have to purchase on our own.
My students work very hard to make beautiful music.
My advanced band alone performs for 4 pep assemblies, 2 serious assemblies, 4 concerts, 1 solo and ensemble festival, 2 after school events, and a local parade.
My Project
The woodwind players at my school are in need of reeds to play their instruments - while some families can afford reeds, most can not. By having a supply of reeds in my office, I can simply hand a reed to a student and keep them playing and participating in class - with no shame or embarrassment for the student.
A good reed is essential to play with a characteristic tone without squeaks.
Students become very frustrated when they play on reeds that are broken, chipped, cracked, or too old (when reeds are old they become weak and difficult to play). Also, as students progress on their instruments they need different strengths of reeds, which I am able to provide through DonorsChoose.org.
