My Students

Can you imagine going through life hating reading, or worse than that, not knowing how to read? I want to keep my sweet 3rd graders from falling into that category. I have several struggling readers...fortunately they're still eager to keep trying!

I teach in a low income school with a very culturally diverse student body.

We are a K-5 school with a little over 700 students. Each year, nearly half of my students speak English as a second language. I typically have a few students with learning disabilities and speech needs. Of the 18 third graders I teach, one third of them began this year reading at a primer or pre-primer level-that means even Kindergarten level books were challenging for them! Thanks to resources we've obtained through DonorsChoose, they have really made gains...but we're still not quite there yet. I need something to help keep my kids motivated to practice their reading skills so that their reading levels will continue to improve. Their difficulties with reading will also translate to difficulties with other subject areas...how can you complete a math word problem when you can't read it? How can you complete an assignment when you can't read the directions? You can't! Help me change that for my kids!

My Project

I try to work in small groups with my struggling readers in order to remediate with hopes of improving their reading abilities. Each day we have independent reading time, which is extremely important for building fluency and improving reading skills. Unfortunately, my struggling readers have a limited selection of books, and often they are disinterested in the titles. The Nook will allow me to download many titles specific to their reading levels either free or at a lower cost than print texts. (I can also use the technology for at grade level readers and above grade level readers as well, which is a plus!) They'll be very excited to use the Nook as they LOVE technology! Your generous donation will help me keep my struggling readers excited about reading!
