Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students read their extended texts, novels or plays, in class with me and I want to give them the materials to interact and engage with these stories. My current students absolutely love transparent sticky notes and we have gone through our supply quickly.

For each section of a text we read, students focus on a different literary element so having these transparent notes and page flags will allow them to mark and track examples of these elements without having to stop reading or mark up the actual books.

Being able to physically annotate textual evidence and mark sections for further review, gives my students a stronger connection to what they are reading and allows them to show their thinking in a concrete way. It also reinforces active participation while reading and promotes students returning to the text to find appropriate textual evidence to support their reasoning. These reading strategies will help students in the long-term and in many different areas.

My students haven't had the easiest educational journeys but in my classroom, they come to love reading again. Offering little "perks" like fun sticky notes, guided reading bookmarks, and page flags helps even the most reluctant reader to want to participate!
