Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You know, I'd originally wanted to teach third grade but I ended up teaching Kinder. The thing they don't tell you about Kindergarteners is they adorn you with hugs, they often call you mom or dad or grandma or auntie and their love is bottomless.
Some of my students start their day at 5 or 6 and leave the building a full twelve hours later.
No longer are we fortunate to have half day kindergarten. So its necessary to try to make their time each day as engaging and spirited as possible.
There's one part of the day that I can pull small reading groups daily. This is the most important time to get my students on grade level so they've got a chance to compete with children from schools with an abundance of resources. If I can make the independent activities enjoyable, the longer I can rotate through small groups. The greater chances of closing a gap.
My Project
I must increase the time my students are independent. It's at these times that I pull small reading groups which are the single most effective way to close the academic gap for low equity schools. If my independent time is filled with worksheets and rote memorization, it cuts that reading time in half.
The biggest reason I want this sensory light table and accessories for The Explorers is so that I can make sure we've built a foundation in which they want to and love to read.
This addition to our classroom would not fix everything, but it would be great way to engage my students so they fall in love with literacy at the very start of their reading career.
