I must increase the time my students are independent. It's at these times that I pull small reading groups which are the single most effective way to close the academic gap for low equity schools. If my independent time is filled with worksheets and rote memorization, it cuts that reading time in half. The biggest reason I want this sensory light table and accessories for The Explorers is so that I can make sure we've built a foundation in which they want to and love to read. This addition to our classroom would not fix everything, but it would be great way to engage my students so they fall in love with literacy at the very start of their reading career.
