Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of vibrant 3rd grade students on the west side of Chicago. They are eager to learn and they are developing a love for reading books. Third grade is when students are expected to make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
My students thrive when they have the opportunity to read books that interest them.
It it important for my classroom library to have different genres that can provide literature that meets the varying interests of my classroom.
My Project
Research states that, "students read more, understand more, and are more likely to continue reading when they have the opportunity to choose what they read"- Every Child Every Day, Richard Allington & Rachael Gabriel, 2012
This year we are encouraging every student to read 1 million words.
A big chunk of the words will come from the books they choose during choice reading. These books will provide my students with more choices in my classroom library.
This week my class passed the 1 million mark! They have collectively read over 1 million words in just a few weeks. They were SO excited to to reach this goal as a class and are eager to read more books. I want to be able to give them more choices in our classroom library so they could possibly become the next "millionaire" reader!
