My Students

I teach at an elementary school that has 26% ESL students. In my class alone, I have 43% of students who identify as ESL. Our ESL students are resilient and highly driven to succeed. They come to our school from all walks of life and are determined not only to learn English but to improve their own languages as well.

As such, we want to provide our ESL students with the same opportunity to develop a love for reading as those who have English as their primary language.

Our hope is that by increasing the amount of bilingual books in our school library, our ESL students will be able to develop strong literacy skills and knowledge that will benefit them in the classroom and also in life beyond.

My Project

We only have a small section in our school library right now that is dedicated to bilingual books of various different levels. This makes it difficult for ESL students to choose a book when they are here.

We want to give ALL of our students the chance to love reading, no matter what language they may speak or understand.

If we were to receive these books, our ESL students who are learning English would still be able to develop their own language in reading, which has been shown to also improve their learning in English as well.
