it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." — Jacqueline Kennedy
I have a wonderful class composed of 22 English Learners, two of which are newcomers to the United States.
100% percent of my students qualify for free lunch. I have a variety of reading levels in my class which makes it difficult for them to find the right book in our small collection of books. In addition, they have very few opportunities to explore new books at home or at the public library. My students love reading time and are motivated to improve their reading goals using Accelerated Reader, which requires them to check out books at their reading level. I can tell their excitement for reading has increased since we took our last Accelerated Reader test and their reading level scores went up.
My Project
Since we have a limited selection of books in our library I often find students waiting for books to be put back on the classroom library shelves. It will be wonderful to have more variety of books in our classroom. As well as being able to access more books I would like my students to have the opportunity to use their own copy of Bridge to Terabithia during the literature circle, which will improve my students reading comprehension and fluency. Once students have access to more books in the class, their Accelerated Reader goals will improve and they'll be challenged through the discussion and analysis of our chapter book, Bridge to Terabithia. Having these resources will provide my students with more interest in books and to take home for independent reading.
More books to add to our growing library will bring smiley faces to my third graders.
Your donations will make a difference in 22 students who are in desperate need of quality literature written from well-known authors so we can build their critical thinking skills. They are looking forward to this project and can't wait for us to be approved!!!
