I work in a Title I school in Henderson, Nevada. In my class, there are a mix of students, some of whom are English language learners, have learning disabilities, lack the necessary materials to practice with at home, or a combination of the above.
My students have the desire to learn and grow and become leaders, but sometimes have difficulty learning due to lack of resources.
They work hard, but sometimes have trouble becoming engaged and invested in the learning process. They are sweet kids who deserve better than I can offer right now.
My Project
Books are powerful. I have seen some of my toughest students get emotional over a story. I have seen meek students find a spark of courage. I have seen students who want nothing to do with school challenge themselves to solve a mystery and put all the pieces together before the detective in their book. I have always tried to keep a variety of books on my shelves for my students to read, but in having a variety, it means that I may not have a lot of options in all of my genres.
It is heartbreaking to tell a student that I do not have any more books in their genre of interest.
These mystery and mythology books will help me expand two key sections of my classroom library. They will give my students more stories to fall into and explore. These books will help my group of students to rise above the challenges they face and fall in love with reading.
