My students need a wider variety of books to find the love of reading.
By handing a book to a child we are handing them the opportunity explore a world he never knew existed.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Adventurous, inspiring, and heartwarming would be the things you'd look for when choosing your next book. But those adjectives were not describing a book, they were describing my students. At the beginning of this year, I was assigned to teach some of the brightest minds in the Rio Grande Valley. However, their brightness can not hide the fact that they live in one of the poorest areas of the United States. Still, what the Rio Grande Valley lacks in resources, it surpasses in its culture. Its rich Mexican American culture is due to the fluidity that the Mexico-US border has. Thousands of people cross this border daily, merging the two countries and languages together.
Nevertheless, when you merge two languages, students can sometimes be confused about what language they should speak in or read in.
The confusion can sometimes discourage them from reading at all. That is why I want to have a wide variety of books that can capture their interest.
Interesting my students in literature will help them succeed. And once they succeed the Rio Grande Valley will be one step closer to becoming one of the best regions in the United States.
My Project
The first time I saw my students extremely motivated and engaged about a topic, was when I talked about Rosa Parks. Then that motivation made them make a connection between her and Malala Yousafzai, a character we had learned about previously. They wondered how they were able to break the silence and cause change. They engaged in higher order thinking without being prompted by a question but guided by their own intuition. They were motivated and wanted to learn more.
It is not every day that a child wants to learn more or to read more.
In the era of technology, it is rare to see a child open a book, especially one about history. But, it is important for us to teach children about the past, to make them look forward to the future by learning from the mistakes we've done. That is what I plan to do with these books such as Be a King: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream and You, Wonder, and Let the Children March.
Books are not only used to teach students how to read. They are also a tool of exploration to the things we may not see. At the end of the day, I want to show my students all that at times we might not see in the Rio Grande Valley.
