The first time I saw my students extremely motivated and engaged about a topic, was when I talked about Rosa Parks. Then that motivation made them make a connection between her and Malala Yousafzai, a character we had learned about previously. They wondered how they were able to break the silence and cause change. They engaged in higher order thinking without being prompted by a question but guided by their own intuition. They were motivated and wanted to learn more. It is not every day that a child wants to learn more or to read more. In the era of technology, it is rare to see a child open a book, especially one about history. But, it is important for us to teach children about the past, to make them look forward to the future by learning from the mistakes we've done. That is what I plan to do with these books such as Be a King: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream and You, Wonder, and Let the Children March. Books are not only used to teach students how to read. They are also a tool of exploration to the things we may not see. At the end of the day, I want to show my students all that at times we might not see in the Rio Grande Valley.
