"Can I stay in at recess and read?"
My students find every opportunity and chance to open their chapter book and become lost in an adventure. I appreciate how my students are enjoying reading.
I am a third grade English language development teacher at an urban elementary school.
The majority of my students are second language learners and speak Cantonese or Spanish at home. I'm continually instilling in them the desire to read with passion and to appreciate the numerous adventures a book has to offer.
My students are easily moldable and yearn to expand their vocabulary. I've taught my students about reading, its benefits for comprehension, and how reading builds upon one's vocabulary. I know they appreciate seeing me read during independent reading time, and laugh when I read something funny. The students want to read the books I read, and even ask to take them home to finish.
My Project
I appreciate how my students are enjoying reading, and reading books at his/her level which are not too hard nor easy. I would like to expand my classroom library with non-fiction science chapter books, such as Magic Tree House and Magic School Bus. The students will be reading, and learning some science concepts at the same time. Yes, as a a teacher, I want to maximize every opportunity to pleasure read and academic learn at the same time.
My students enter as eight years olds, but leave as lifetime readers.
Support the students' enjoyment, dedication, and desire to read more through adding chapter books to our classroom library.
