This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
First grade is an important year for student growth and achievement. My students are entering the first grade eager and ready to learn how to read, however, many of them do not have access to books at home or a library within reasonable distance to their homes. This puts students at a disadvantage at an early age. The more books and access to materials students have at home, the greater their chances are getting to and remaining on grade level in reading/comprehension. Location and economic status should not determine a student's access to education.
My Project
First Grade is a critical year for student growth in terms of Literacy. Students are learning to become avid readers and need access to many texts in a week to push their development. We will use these texts to explore new topics as well as learn new words and practice our reading skills. Students who may not have books at home, will be able to take these books home and read with their families.
Having access to a variety of current books and authors will increase students' enthusiasm towards reading.
Students may see an interesting topic or new author that will push them towards a life-long love of reading. This will be my first year teaching 1st grade and as such I don't have many books at a first grade level. This will be the foundation of our library that will hopefully continue to grow with your support and generosity.
