Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in the poorest urban zip code in California. Students who live in the neighborhood are witness to graffiti, boarded up houses, trash, and police and gang activity. No matter that, our school has an impressive reputation throughout district. So much so, that other families from more affluent areas around the city choose to send their children to this amazing school. We have a science and technology focus that encompasses all students, as well as a Gifted and Talented program. The school has proven for the past 12 years that all students can and do achieve when given the opportunity and tools to do so.
My Project
My students are really into technology and they love their time on the laptops and tablets. They enjoy reading online texts, practicing their typing skills and playing fun games. But I'm looking to put a real book back into their hands. I want us to be able to gather on the carpet in a circle with our books in our laps. I want for the students to find a cozy spot around the classroom to get lost in their books. I don't want them tethered to an outlet or getting frustrated when their tablet freezes up. By building our classroom library we can find a balance between using technology to learn from and having actual books in their hands to read.
I want to continue to foster their love of reading and literature.
This can be accomplished when each individual student has their own copy of the book. Please help me achieve this goal for my amazing school kids.
