Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am currently the music teacher who travels from school to school. My school is located in a predominantly low income community where we offer a 100% free meals. We are a Title I school comprised of all ethnicities. My students love music and can’t wait to sing, dance, and play music. Each child is unique and each have talents they love to share.
Many students come from single parent homes where budgets can be tight and resources are lacking.
Though they endure adversities, they are always eager to learn and participate in music!
My Project
My students are so excited to play their new instruments but don't have any books. They're ready to read and play simple melodies and improve their reading skills.
One of our main objectives is to teach reading enrichment through songs.
Adding to that the joy of playing an instrument only enhances the students' excitement for literacy. With music they are internalizing the fundamentals, phonetics, and grammar of the English language. This creates a rewarding and self-esteem building atmosphere for many of the students who are learning English as a second language.
Especially helpful with the objective towards reading will be the Sing-Along Read-Along Classics and the All-American Partner Songs as singing words allows children the time to fully enunciate vowels and consonants.
We will use the Boom Boom! Popular Movie and TV Songs for Boomwhackers Book to tap into students prior knowledge of familiar songs. The melodic notation is easy enough for beginning musicians to start grasping sight reading. Tracking music on the five-line staff aids the tracking required for reading text.
The elementary guitar students will get a head start on next year's holiday program by learning to read melodic lines, lyrics, and chord symbols. Each of these tasks develops strong skill sets that when combined give music students the critical edge for educational success.
