We like to have fun while we LEARN to read!! My students need games and puzzles to supplement the classroom reading instruction. My partner and I are often on the move teaching in hallways and common areas, we need easy activities to go!
Almost 70% of our school population are beneficiaries of assistance of some kind.
We are a large public school in an urban area. The students we serve come to us from poverty and often single parent homes. We also serve a very large Burmese population, which brings interesting challenges in itself. Many of our Burmese friends come to us with limited skills, but incredible drive. In spite of the conditions in which some of our children live, they thrive at our school. We provide an atmosphere that is warm, loving, challenging and supportive. We love our students and many of us think of them as our own children. We hold them to high standards and expect everyone to learn. We have been successful in that venture, this year making AYP and receiving a report card grade of an A. The staff is committed to continuing to strive to bring challenging and thoughtful instruction to all of our students.
My Project
I am requesting supplies that will provide high interest supplemental activities for the students that I serve. I am requesting 2 sets of everything as I have a teaching partner, so in a sense, your generous donation will be helping 2 educators and hundreds of students. Research has shown that when students are engaged in high interest challenging activities, real learning takes place. We are working with students that are performing below grade level expectations. It is our mission to bring them to grade level by the end of the school year. The students love the games and interactive learning. Last year I was making my own cards and games and trying them out on the student groups. Even the silliest of games seemed to command the students attention and engage them in the learning process. It is my hope to build my tool box of games and activities to reach more students and help them to reach their full potential. My students need some hands on activities to supplement the direct instruction we will provide in language arts. It can be done for ALL students.
All students deserve the opportunity for success.
Funding restrictions and budget cuts should not determine who receives service. Educators need to stay committed to the challenge of success for every student. I will be able to do this with the generous support of Donors Choose. Thank you for granting my students this opportunity.
