Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have just completed my 4th year as a third grade teacher at P.S. 345 in East New York. Next year, I will start a new challenge: 5th grade. I am very excited about this new endeavor, but it requires new tools to help my students achieve. Most of the students at P.S. 345 qualify for free lunch, and many are in need of special services in order to remediate severe learning deficits. Despite the obstacles facing them, my students are always eager learners who come to school each day with a smile. This coming year, the fifth graders will face a new standardized test created by the state. They will have to demonstrate reading comprehension and writing skills on this test in order to pass the grade and graduate elementary school. I have used the Scholastic Reading Skills Kit (Level A) with my third graders with great success. This kit includes high interest reading selections with skill-based activities that enable students to work independently while building necessary skills. The passages and activities range in difficulty, offering remediation for students currently below grade level and continued challenge as their confidence grows. The activities give students the opportunity to practice strategies for skills tested on the state exam including: finding the main idea, drawing conclusions and making inferences, using context clues, and restating facts and details. Because this resource is used independently, my students have the flexibility to move at their own pace. Because I know this resource works, I would like a Scholastic Reading Skills Kit to use with my fifth graders next fall. Please help my students develop reading skills necessary for their exams and throughout their lives by sponsoring the purchase of Scholastic Reading Skills Kit Box C (which ranges from early 4th to mid 6th grade level).
