I am a fifth grade English Language Arts and Math teacher at Watkins-Nance Elementary School in Columbia, SC. Watkins-Nance is a Title I school, the majority of students receive free or reduced lunch. The area from which my students come is a high poverty, high crime area. (Last year a former student was shot and killed while sitting on her front porch and several of my students witnessed this.) Needless to say, reading and writing are not at the top of their agenda. I would like to create a literature rich environment! Starting with a wonderful place for my students to read. The first thing we need of course is a place to sit therefore, we need a rug that would be large enough to accommodate 20-25 fifth graders. That's where you magnificent donors come in. I really need your help in getting this rug so that I can set up for summer school and the up-coming school year. This is something that will be used for many years to come.
