I teach at a tuition-free, public charter school providing students in grades 6-8 a hands-on, project-based curriculum. The school is located next to Wings Over the Rockies Exploration Of Flight at Centennial Airport in Englewood, Colorado.
For us, teaching children to “think for themselves” is not just about solving problems, but also about an organic vision of the world in which they live in (and one they will inherit).
Our curriculum focuses on core academic competencies in addition to key focus areas that will prepare learners for promising careers in aerospace and technology.
In addition to academic excellence, we are committed to supporting learners’ development of emotional intelligence, life skills, and community engagement. Our teachers (facilitators) are devoted to providing learners with the best academic and emotional support by way of small class sizes and individualized attention.
My Project
In my language arts classroom, I hope to instill a lifelong love of reading. Students get lots of time to focus on independent choice books, class novels, and small book club groups. As a new school, we currently don't have a large number of books for students to choose from during reading time.
My classroom has become an unofficial school library, and we need books that will engage all readers!
There is a strong interest in graphic novels and fantasy books. Getting kids hooked on a series is one of the best ways to keep them reading. Books on the shopping list were chosen with these factors in mind.
I've been borrowing books from our public library for students to use during each of our aviation and aerospace-focused projects, but it'd be wonderful to have permanent nonfiction materials available in my classroom as well.
