Mrs. Jenkins from Kansas City MO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need more copies of Kwame Alexander's books to engage and inspire them.

Welcome to my classroom. We're struggling readers with various disabilities, ages 13-16. We also have classmates who've immigrated to America and are learning English.
We're in a Title 1 school, with most learners on free and reduced lunch.
Our school strives to encourage students to use their best effort and persevere. Consistently, we're one of the top urban middle schools in the state. A big part of our results is that our students believe in themselves and they strive to achieve.
Mr. Alexander's free verse novels illuminate and support core life skills that we encourage our students to employ. Each time we finish one of his books, they wish they could sit down and talk with him personally.
My students have devoured Mr. Alexander's books: The Crossover, Booked, and The Playbook. Besides replacing some of our worn out copies, I want to add his latest book, Rebound, as an additional class set. Looking at this request, you'll see that a hardbound class set (that will stand up to years of wear), is not cheap; you are investing in my students.
All of Mr. Alexander's books focus on underlying themes of growth mindset and resilience.
His stories not only reach them through rhythm and rhyme, but references to competition, first love, school, parents, and all things that must be conquered on and off the court.
As their teacher, my objective is to stretch their reading skills, improve their vocabularies, and strengthen their figurative language usage. Many of my struggling readers come to me on a 2nd to 3rd grade level. We work all year to get to a 5th or 6th grade level.
Finding a book that reaches your students is tricky. Finding an author who engages and inspires them is essential to their success.
