This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The 20 students in our high school book club represent a variety of genders and races, but almost all come from lower income homes. Some take dual credit classes and read at a college level, while others love books, yet read significantly below grade level.
What they all have in common, is their love of a good story.
And what's I've learned from working with kids, is that nothing sparks camaraderie among students of different backgrounds, like the shared reading of a great book.
My Project
Learning to read for pleasure is a crucial step in becoming a lifelong learner.
With your support, my students will be able to see the fun side of reading as we for our Reading Raiders Battle of the Books team.
Students from diverse backgrounds will come together to form our book club. We will read (at home and at school) and discuss these 10 titles. In the spring, we will compete against other area high schools in the Battle of the Books.
Many of our students don't get to see reading as a "fun" activity. This positive, team building experience will not only develop them as readers, but it will also help them find the community of readers that exists on our campus.
