My Students

Do you remember when you thought everyone was looking at you? Or maybe you felt like no one noticed you. Being a kid is hard but they are not alone!

Gompers Elementary School is a small, neighborhood school.

These students need someone to believe in them. In the past 5 years our school poverty level has really increased. Many students don't even have books at home. Our major goal this year is improving reading skills so that ALL of our students will have the skills they need to be successful.

My Project

Currently we have very few books in the room. The only books are ones that I have purchased. Book groups create a connection that these students need. The books go beyond a simple class reading assignment. Students begin to trust their feelings and share their thoughts in a safe environment. These kids are so important to me. There future is in our hands - we can't fail them now.

Why don't kids read?

For our students they simply lack the reading material that interests them. They struggle day to day and that is not future that anyone wants for them. Reading about friends and difficult situations allows all them realize they are not alone in world and may even help them to deal with those struggles.
