I want to support my students in Social Studies and Reading by using historical fiction books in my Language Arts classroom. Students are reluctant readers if books aren't interesting and often students don't enjoy books that are assigned and forced upon them. I have found historical novels that will appeal to students and encourage them to read.
Class sets of The Book Thief and Suspect Red will capture my students interests and show them some sides of World War II and the McCarthy Era that they might be unaware of.
In addition to the history aspects of these novels, students will excited about reading and will want to read more. I have included some other historical fictional books that kids can read just for fun. Hopefully they will want to dive into more historical fiction!
