In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains sits a school that is a community in itself. The building is full of teachers who love teaching, staff members who love helping our students, and students who want to learn. We are a small town, with small town values and ideas. Our school is a PreK-8 school and with so many students, money is tight. Unfortunately, many of our students are affected by the current opioid epidemic and when they come to school they are already fighting a battle. The bright smiles, the can-do attitudes, and the "light bulb" moments are victories every day in our school.
We need to encourage our students to overcome their obstacles and understand it is up to them to become the person they want to be.
My Project
Our classroom is in desperate need of quality non-fiction books that will help us understand the impact of events and people on our history as Americans. We also love working in literature circles with our peers to help us better understand the text and to evaluate other opinions about the events and the books. We have history books, but they do not tell the entire story. We want to be able to dig deeper into significant historical events in American History. We want to be able to explore the impact some people have on our great nation.
We cannot understand our history as Americans until we can explore it better.
We are hungry for knowledge, we just do not have the means to do so. We are a poor school in a school district who has budget struggles. There is not money for the extras, like supplemental literature that will help us to develop a better understanding of history and science. These non-fiction books will help us to do so.
