This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a wonderful class of 18 first graders. My students are simply amazing! There are nine boys and nine girls. Some of the students in my room receive special education services.
Our school is largely Hispanic, with over 70% of the students qualifying for ESOL services.
All of my students, with the exception of one, qualify for ESOL services. Our school also qualifies for Title I funding. Most of my students live below the poverty line and have difficult home lives, yet they come to school each day excited and eager to learn. I also serve as the inclusion teacher for first grade some of my students receive Special Education services.
It is my privilege and delight to be their teacher. I aim to instill in each child a deep love of learning and strive to help them realize their unique gifts and talents.
My Project
There are many components of reading instruction-phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. All of these skills must be taught and practiced.
My students need books on their level in order to be able to practice what they are learning as well as to build their fluency.
It is important that students are able to read on their level. These books are just right for them. If a book is too hard, students will become easily frustrated. If a book is too easy, they are not challenged and will become easily distracted.
As stated previously, 17 out of 18 of my students are English Language Learners. Due to learning a new language, many of them need more time practicing early reading skills. Many early readers are decodable (students are able to sound out words), but they are not rich with meaning. They need quality literature that is on their level that they can comprehend. These books will do that!
