My Students
Our elementary school is an urban, Title 1 where a vast majority of my students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
I love teaching my third graders.
These students face many challenges yet come to school every day ready to try their best. My most important role as their teacher at this crucial time in their young lives is to help them develop their sense of self and to learn how to be successful throughout their school career. They are bright, playful, and motivated kids and I am honored to help them utilize the skills they already have to blossom as 3rd graders.
My Project
Last year I switched to third grade and was so inspired and excited by all the reading opportunities that came with it. I incorporated "Independent Reading" after attending a workshop last spring. This process gives students the opportunity to self select reading material, sit anywhere in the room (under a desk, in their chair, sprawled on the carpet, in a bean bag, etc), read, conference with me, and journal about their thoughts and ideas. When I surveyed my students at the end of the year to find out their favorite part of reading class, over 75% of them said IDR (independent reading). That was powerful.
I am very excited to inspire my students with literature about nature as this is my theme in my classroom this year.
I have selected seventeen books that inspire students to connect with nature. I need books on many different levels. This is where the two requested tablets come in. I am looking forward to incorporating screen reading to make any level available for a student as well as using the tablets for math and reading games. Last year I borrowed yoga mats from another teacher who needs them back this year. Kids begged to use them at all different times of the day. I think this is a simple way to get students to want to sit down and read. All the material selected in this project will change a child's perspective of reading from seeing at as a chore to seeing it as a relaxing, wonderful experience.
