Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students I service come from hard-working families; however, all are below the standard reading level for their grade based on New York State Standards. This is in part due to disabilities; in addition, many come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. All of my students are one to two years behind grade-level expectations, and my fear is that if I am not able to support their needs this year, they will only fall further behind.
Unfortunately not only is their reading lagging behind their peers but their knowledge of the world around them.
Children need to be exposed not only to rich literature but also quality engaging informational texts. I want my students to have all the opportunities I grew up with.
Many of my students receive free lunch and are from single-parent homes, and most come to school with no supplies and struggle every day.
My Project
Research and my previous years of experience have proven that this intervention has a positive effect on general reading achievement. I have worked with students who have made over two years of progress in one year using this program.
Guided Reading is a small-group literacy intervention designed to help struggling readers achieve grade-level competency.
This intervention will help me match students with texts of progressing difficulty aimed at targeting their areas of need to help them progress and close the reading gap.
Once we receive the books the lives of the students will be majorly impacted. These books will provide me with the ability to continue working in small groups to target reading skills that students need to focus on.
