I am in a large city of New York. All of my students receive free lunch and many are from single parent homes and most come to school with no supplies and struggle every day. But they want better, they want to learn and I believe they can. The students in my class are a diverse group. They come from hard working families, however many are below the standard reading level for their grade based on New York State Standards. This is in part due to disabilities, in addition to many who are English Language Learners and/or come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage, as compared to those who are fortunate enough to have been raised in a home where parents have provided the initial steps towards literacy.
