Reading Makes A Difference
My students need 20 copies of "Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride", by George Selden.
We are a 4th grade class in a middle class community. Our school is a beautiful campus set among the trees of the hillside, and we celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year. I teach reading to about 38 students for one hour a day, 4 days a week.
Our program is called ExCEL and we have designated several key levels of student achievement to target intensive instruction in reading. Our goal at my level is to learn to read chapter books and full length novels. Though we aspire to expand our reading experiences, my group is large, and I have only small sets of books.
In order to make this project work, we need to fill out the partial sets of novels we currently own to include all students. This requires purchasing additional copies of novels we already own. This way the entire class will have a copy of the book and be able to read independently.
Through the novel Chester Cricket's Pigeon Ride, students are introduced to the characters of George Seldon's Newberry Honor award winner, A Cricket in Times Square. Our hope is to help students make the transition from short picture books, and simple story lines, to more complex and rewarding reading experiences. Your assistance in this project will help motivate the readers of our 4th grade class into life long enthusiastic readers!
