Reading Love

My students need a class set of The Little Prince to learn to love to read by engaging in a text that means something. I want to teach students how to love reading by showing them how I do.

My Students

My students are loud and energetic and incredible. I want my students to see how big the world is and feel like there is a place for them in it. This text will teach my students that there is a lesson in every experience and the choices we make make us who we are.

I work with students from diverse cultural, racial and linguistic backgrounds.

Many of them come from families headed by siblings or parents or other guardians who did not complete high school. Many of them do not speak English at home. Many of them live in neighborhoods plagued by gang violence and poverty. All of them are bright, amazing individuals learning how to belong to their communities as academically successful students.

My Project

The Little Prince is a story about love and reciprocity and finding the place where or person with whom a person can be herself. It is my favorite book, and I have a personal collection of translations of this text from around the world. I have already designed a unit around The Little Prince focused on how we derive meaning from words and how our relationship with others and with the world contributes to the way we interpret meaning and determine importance. Students will read, write and talk about how loss alters our perspective, how love is worth more than material possessions and how "language is the source of misunderstanding".

This passionate insight into human folly and the power young people have to see it makes this book, in my opinion, invaluable to students who are too often made to feel disenfranchised and powerless.

So many of my students are reluctant readers who are rightfully skeptical about the applicability of literature to their lives. No one is more passionate about this text than I, and I want my students to have the opportunity to see what it looks like for a reader to be in love with her book.
