My students need adapted classic novels for high interest reading at a reading level appropriate for special education students, and presentation boards to use for projects and reports connected to these books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. —Benjamin Franklin
My students love to learn.
All of my students qualify for free lunch along with a majority of the school. My school is a kindergarten through eighth grade school, and my students are in sixth through eighth grade.
My students require Special Education services for a majority of the school day, so they are in a self-contained classroom for students with intellectual disabilities. My students have intellectual disabilities, and we practice life skills daily. We work on functional academic skills and vocational skills.
My students are beginning their transition into high school, and then adulthood. Middle school is a pivotal time with so many skills to learn and a limited amount of time. Our life skills lessons blend academic, daily living, and personal/social skills together.
My Project
My students are special education students who spend a majority of their day in the special education classroom. They have a hunger for learning but need work that is adapted so it's at an appropriate instructional level. I want my students to be exposed to classic novels and these adapted versions allow my students to get the "meat and potatoes" of the books, but still be able to read these books independently.
These books will give us an opportunity to study and discuss components of literature.
These components include citing textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says. Also, the students can work on identifying the points of view of different characters in the books. The students will have the opportunity to work on grade level standards with the assistance of these materials.
The project boards will be useful when completing projects and presentations on the books we are reading. Project-based learning is an engaging way to assess proficiency in our work.
