My Students

My class is a wonderful mix of 4th and 5th graders who really struggle with reading and basic math skills. We have created an intense program where we spend two years really helping them learn the basic skills they will need to be successful in middle and high school. Most of our students increase their reading level by about 2-4 grade levels in the two years they are in my program.

In addition to acquiring the academic skills necessary to be successful in middle and high school, we also teach our students a lot of self-regulation skills.

They learn a lot about themselves as a learner which ultimately helps them achieve their goals.

My Project

During the pandemic, my students have not had access to books on their reading level. Even when we return to the classroom, they will not be able to share books the way we have in the past.

I attribute the success of our program to the fact that I have a very large classroom library of high interest, low level books for the students to read.

My students have said that they miss being able to read and were very disappointed to learn that I had to put my library away.

We used to devote at least 20 minutes of class time every day to self-selected reading and at least 30 minutes of time at home to read. This allowed our students the ability to practice all the skills we have been teaching them. Since they do not have access to their own books, we have not been able to practice these vital skills and their love of reading is not being nurtured.

Since my students can’t collectively use my library, I want to provide them with individual libraries that they can use both in school and at home. Therefore, I am requesting 5 sets of the I Can Read library so I can give each student at least 10 books on their level. The tote bags will be used to bring the books to and from school and will help the students keep track of the books so they don’t get lost. My students will then be able to practice the reading skills they are learning in class and really see their reading level soar.
