Reading Is Power. Reading Is Enjoyed Through Choice!

My students need new books that they can enjoy during independent reading time. Reading is power and these books will update my classroom library and allow students access to new books that they want!

My Students

The students who will be entering my sixth grade classroom are diverse and speak many different languages at home. Many of the students are classified as English as a Second Language learners and/or Special Education students. The school I teach at is classified as a Title I school, which means that, as a school community, many of the students come from low-income households. Students are welcomed into the classroom each and everyday and know the space will be a safe and comfortable environment for them to learn and participate.

My students are resilent and motivated learners who are always curious and asking questions about all topic areas.

They come into my classroom knowing that they will learn, be challenged, have immense opportunities to ask questions and participate with their peers as well as in whole class discussions.

My Project

A goal of mine has always been to get my students to fall in love with math and reading (and the other subjects too). However, in the past year, getting all of my students to really enjoy a book on their own has been a struggle. I have had book talks and classroom read alouds, but not all students were "eager" to independently read. I realized, while I was packing up my classroom and really looked through the library, that many of the books in my classroom weren't that appealing. They were what the kids would label as "old", "non-exciting book covers", and hard to connect with. The Big Nate series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and Who Was series were always off the shelves, but the other non-fiction and fiction books just seemed to sit there and collect dust no matter how hard I tried to get kids to read them.

Reading integrates itself with every subject and the more one reads the better fluency, comprehension, and extended vocabulary they will get.

That is why this upcoming year it is a goal of mine to get students to be intrinsically excited to read. I want titles they can connect with and be overly excited to read and share with others. All of the books on the list have been either researched by me or given to me by the librarian or other teachers. In addition to the books, I have included a scanner so that these donated books can be marked into a system and checked out just like a library so I can keep track of the books for years to come. Lastly, the Number Talks book is for my own professional library as Number Talks is a great routine to get kids to mentally compute numbers.
