Reading is More Than Fundamental

My students need a wide variety of 57 books in their class library from which to choose to read.

My Students

For the first time in 14 years, I am teaching a combined 5th and 6th grade class. My greatest need is to create a class library. According to the American Library Association, classroom libraries should contain 20-25 books per student. In a class of 30 students, this totals between 600-750 book.

The Key Learning Community is a K-12 Program based upon the Theory of Multiple Intelligences developed by Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University.

The program is rooted in the belief that all students have eight areas of intelligence: linguistic, logical-mathematical, naturalist (science), spatial(art/geography), bodily-kinesthetic (physical education/health), musical (instrumental/vocal), interpersonal (history/collaboration), and intrapersonal (internal growth). Our goal is then to identify and build upon their own individual strengths. Like most Indianapolis Public Schools, 86% of our students qualify for free or reduced meals. Our students, however, elect to attend a school that is year-round, has a longer school day, does not have sports teams and requires a longer travel time than if they attended their boundary school.

My Project

My desire is that students gain or maintain a love of reading and sharing of various genres of literature. I want every student to go to the class library and find something that interests them. Instead of bothering others when they complete an assignment early, students will pull out a book they are reading or will go to the library and lay out to read. When finished with a book, students will excitedly recommend the book to others.

Reading is more than fundamental.

Thinking back on my own childhood, there were no such things as computers, digital cameras, or cellphones. Most of these things I had to teach myself how to use. (And by the time I got comfortable using an item, the next version was introduced.) As long as our world continues to advance, being able to self-teach through reading is more than fundamental it is essential.
