Reading Is Magical!

Help me give my students a magical experience as we develop and create potions during our third grade Fantasy Week. The entire grade will use these vials to experiment with assorted ingredients and replicate the magic of Hogwarts.

My Students

I have been teaching third graders for 15 years and I can't imagine any group of children that is more accepting and willing to try new ideas than eight and nine-year-olds. These kids come to school eager to learn and ready to work. It is my responsibility to capitalize on that and help take them as far as they can go with the kind of magical experiences that you only get to have as a child.

My students bring so much creativity and imagination to their work.

I'm excited to help them build on that and create lasting experiences they will take with them and to foster the love of learning we have built together.

My Project

Each year the third grade embarks on an extensive study of reading genres. We spend a few weeks reading and writing in each of the major genres, and our fantasy unit is one of the most anticipated events of the year. The entire third grade is transformed into a school for witchcraft and wizardry as students are immersed in the magical world of Harry Potter.

Writing a good story is so much bigger than just having a beginning, middle, and end...and it can be so much more engaging when students experience the world they're writing about.

During Fantasy Week third graders will be assigned to a house, cast spells with their wands, study magical plants and creatures, decipher clues in their search for magical artifacts, and visit an enchanted village. Even with all that, the absolute highlight of the week is always Potions Class. This is where students collaborate with their housemates from other classes to create a series of potions. They use everything they have learned during the week about writing fantasy to create recipes, cause/effect analysis, usage charts, and journal entries about the 8 different elixirs they have mixed and collected in their personal potions kit, which comes complete with the assorted vials I am asking donors to help me fund.

Even though Fantasy week can only be for a short time, and no amount of pleading or magical efforts on the part of the students can create more time, the effects of this week last for years. Over and over again I have encountered students or parents from years past who tell me they still have their wands and potions and journals from Fantasy Week. They tell me what a difference the experience made in their feelings about books and how their love of reading began here.
