Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd graders at a Title 1 school in North Carolina where most of my students come from the neighborhood and receive free lunch and breakfast due to their socioeconomic status. Also, for many of my students English is their second language.
We looped together from 2nd to 3rd grade and have a very close bond.
My students are very intelligent, funny, and passionate about learning. They set high goals for themselves and talk regularly about future careers and colleges they want to attend.
My goal is to continue to foster their love for education by keeping them engaged in what they are learning.
My Project
My students love Harry Potter almost as much as I do. I read the first book in the series to them last year and they're HOOKED! We have a Harry Potter themed classroom and we've been sorted into our houses and now we want to READ!
They have been begging me to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets this year!
However, being in 3rd grade now there is a big push from administration for students to have the text in hand. Our school is entirely free and reduced lunch and I cannot ask every family to purchase this book for their child.
We will be doing a novel study using Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My students will be thrilled to read this book and their skills will improve significantly because they are invested in this magical world. We can't wait to learn more about Harry, his friends, and their fight against evil!
