Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are energetic, inquisitive young women from New York City with a passion for learning, standing up for their beliefs, and of course, dancing. They like to have fun but are very serious about their learning at the same time. What makes them most special to me is that they always stand by one another and support each other in becoming the best students and young ladies that they can be.

As their teacher, I was beyond proud of their passion and courage when they protested on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall for stricter gun laws, making it into a feature picture for the New York Times.

It was a true testament to their willingness to learn about the issues that surround them as young students in a big city. Although they are only 12-13 years old, they showed that they will not be silenced and that they are ready to fight for their education. This is why my 7th graders are truly a special group to me.

My Project

I'm looking to get my students some new and exciting books that they can read independently. I've selected a number of new young adult titles that I think will not only spark their interest but will also improve their reading levels. If a student is interested in what she is reading, she is more likely to finish it all the way through!

In order to foster a love of reading, students need to choose the books they want to read!

The more books they read, the better their vocabulary comes and thus improves their reading level. Help these kids succeed!
