My classroom is full of energetic and eager to learn children. My goal is to have a classroom full of grade-level readers and mathematicians by the end of the school year! I plan to use decodable reading books as a teaching assistant!
I work in a public Title I elementary school serving students in grades PK - 5 in which such a large percentage of the school population receive free and reduced-price meals that we have been provided a grant to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
My classroom consists of 20 first grade students and me. My students consist of boys, girls, English speakers, and non-English speakers. Additionally, my children vary in their educational abilities with some students demonstrating above grade level behaviors while others have identified special academic needs. The literacy backgrounds of my students are also diverse with some having continuous exposure to books and reading and some having little to no experiences.
My Project
I have chosen books that highlight sight words and phonics skills to assist my struggling readers including those with special learning needs like dyslexia.
All children love books and stories!
However, for those who struggle with reading it can be frustrating and lead students to view reading as a negative part of school which will eventually affect all parts of their lives!
I am looking to provide my struggling readers with more support using these skill-specific books to encourage them instead of discourage. Even small successes in reading lead to confidence and growth that will carry them far past first grade!
