They loved looking at the different colors, shapes, sizes, and textures and trying to imagine how they could be used. I have loved hearing students talk about what their section represents and seeing them proudly point out the pieces they helped create. They are learning to share ideas, compromise, be patient, and work together while also developing their artistic and fine-motor skills. As an art teacher, those are the moments I treasure when students realize that what they create has value and that their ideas can contribute to something bigger than themselves.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue designing and completing the individual sections of our mosaic. Once the individual sections are complete, we will begin the exciting process of bringing everything together into one large collaborative mural. Students will be able to see how the contributions from different classes connect to create one unified work of art. There was an immediate sense of curiosity when the materials were introduced. Students wanted to know what they could make, how the different materials worked, and when they would get a chance to use them. You could see their imaginations working as they looked at the materials and started thinking about the possibilities. For my students, having new materials to explore made the art room feel like a place of discovery.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building independence through our art centers while connecting the activities to the elements and principles of art we are learning in class. \r\nAs they become more comfortable with the centers, I want students to begin taking greater ownership of their creative process.\r\n\r\nI am excited to see where their ideas take them. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching elementary art is that you can give a child a few materials and a little encouragement, and suddenly they have created something you never could have imagined. Most importantly, students experienced the excitement of creating a print and seeing their ideas transformed into finished artwork. Having new, dependable printmaking supplies allowed me to teach printmaking more fully and confidently. Instead of limiting the lesson because materials were worn or depleted, I was able to provide students with enough supplies to actively participate, experiment with different techniques, and make multiple prints. \r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of teaching art is watching students discover that they can create something they never thought they could.
